« The glass transition : New insights into an old problem »

Résumé :

Glasses are omnipresent in our daily life. We find them in the form of bottles or containers, window pans, but also in paint, food, or golf clubs. Although mankind has used this material since more than 5000 years, the true nature of the glassy state is still not understood. Is it only a liquid that is flowing exceedingly slowly or is it a new type of phase ? In this talk I will first present some general properties of glasses and subsequently discuss some recent results from theory and computer simulations that indicate that glasses are indeed a new phase of solids.

Un café+croissant sera servi dans le hall à partir de 10h45.
